Australian summer heat can be hard on not only you as a rider; but also can be testing for your motorcycle’s engine. Make your motorcycle radiators’ job a little easier by performing regular service. Most bike manufacturers recommend that you replace the radiator fluid every two years, we’ll tell you how. The process is pretty standard for most motorcycle radiators, but some may have very specific steps so consult your bike’s manual before you start!
Before you start, make sure that your bike is off and cool before you open the radiator cap as you can easily burn yourself. Also, most motorcycle radiators coolants are toxic so it’s a wise idea to wear protective gloves and keep it away from any place where your pets may drink it. If the motorcycle radiators coolant is green in colour, it’s probably made with ethylene glycol, which is toxic but even if it is made with non-toxic propylene glycol as is blue or pink in colour, treat is just the same.
Next locate the drain plug on the water pump. It has a sealing washer underneath it and is normally located at the lowest point on the pump cover. Place a pan under the motorcycle to collect the motorcycle radiators fluid and open the drain bolt. The fluid will slowly ooze out till you open the radiator cap fully and then it’ll come gushing out. If the tank is easy to remove, drain the tank and rinse it out with fresh water.
You should also take the time to squeeze the hoses and check for cracks and hardening. Check that the hose clamps are tight and inspect your motorcycle radiators fins too.
